On February 22, 2011 at approximately 11:44 p.m., the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a fire at an abandoned residence on Highway 264 near Jones Bridge Road. Firefighters with Bath and Pantego Volunteer Fire Departments responded to battle the blaze. At approximately 11:49, an on-duty Beaufort County Deputy who was responding to assist on Highway 264 located a second fire at an abandoned residence at 2830 Free Union Church Road in Pinetown. Pinetown and Bunyan Volunteer Fire Departments responded to fight the second fire.

While attempting to extinguish the fire at 2830 Free Union Church Road, firefighters received a report at approximately 12:14 a.m. of a third fire at 4204 Free Union Church Road. The property was a block structure used as a community fellowship club. Upon arrival, fire crews from Pinetown and Bunyan found fire through the roof of the building and began to fight the fire.

At approximately 12:20 a.m., firefighters that had been working to put out the fire on Highway 264 discovered a fourth fire at an abandoned residence

on Free Union Church Road between Jones Bridge Road and Christian School Road. Bath and Pantego firefighters worked to extinguish that blaze. Investigators and extra Deputies were called out to begin the investigations into the source of the fires in Beaufort County.

At 12:51 a.m., the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a structure fire at an uninhabited residence at 10180 Highway 32 South in Washington County. Pinetown and Bunyan Volunteer Fire Departments and the Plymouth Fire Department responded to fight the fire.

On February 25th at approximately 10:49 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a barn fire on South Boyd Road in Bath, NC. Deputies and SBI Agents responded to the location. Firefighters from Bath and Pinetown Volunteer Fire Departments, NC Forestry Service, and Beaufort County Emergency Management responded to extinguish the fire. Based on the information collected so far in the investigation, the source of the barn fire was determined to be arson. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation continues to assist in the investigation. Investigators believe these fires may be related to a church fire reported on South White Post Road in Bath on February 16, 2011 and an abandoned residence fire on Delia Wallace Road in Bath reported on February 19, 2011.

In total, Beaufort County has seven suspected arsons within the last two weeks. Anyone with information about these fires is asked to call Beaufort County Crime Stoppers at (252)974-6400 or Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office at (252)946-7111. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000.00 for information leading to an arrest in these cases. Callers do not have to give their name to receive a reward. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

On February 22, 2011 at approximately 10:14 a.m., Deputies responded to the area of Sandpointe Drive in Washington in reference to a report of a breaking and entering. While patrolling the area, Corporal Greg Rowe observed a suspicious truck on the shoulder of Turkey Trot #2 with a subject standing in the passenger side doorway. Cpl. Rowe stopped and spoke with the subject to investigate if the subject was involved with or had information about the break-in that had just occurred.

While speaking with the subject, Cpl. Rowe learned that the man was a registered sex offender in Hertford County. The subject reported that he lived on Harvette Road in Washington and was a student at Beaufort County Community College. Two knives were recovered from the subject’s pants pocket during the encounter. One of the knives was a folding knife that was in the open position.

Based on information collected during the interview, Cpl. Rowe arrested Marcus Jerrod Mitchell, age 29, of Harvette Road in Washington, NC and charged him with two counts of Failure to Register as a Sex Offender and Carrying a Concealed Weapon. Of the two counts for Failing to Register, one was for failing to register his place of residence in Beaufort County and one for failing to notify Beaufort County that he was attending BCCC. Mitchell was brought before Magistrate Smith and held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $5,000.00 secured bond.

On February 17, 2011, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit arrested Jimmy Lee Caves, 20 years of age, of 524 Hodges Road in Chocowinity.  Caves was charged with Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Fictitious Information to an Officer.

Caves arrest stemmed from Investigators receiving information from Crime Stoppers that Caves is involved in the distribution of marijuana.  Investigators conducted a traffic stop on a white Nissan Maxima that Caves was driving.  Investigators conducted a search of the Nissan Maxima after K-9 Elza alerted on the Nissan Maxima.  Investigators found marijuana and digital scales.  Caves gave a false name and address at the time of his arrest.

Caves was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $5,000.00 secured bond.

On February 17, 2011, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit served arrest warrants on Rhonda Harrison, 41 years of age, of 1750 Clarendon Avenue in Bath and Roxanne Taylor, 48 years of age, of 1750 Clarendon Avenue in Bath. They were charged with three counts of Trafficking in Opium, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Their arrest stemmed from Investigators making purchases of prescription pain pills that contain opium from Harrison and Taylor.  Investigators searched their residence at the time of their arrest and found marijuana, marijuana smoking pipes and plastic bags used to package marijuana. 

   Harrison and Taylor were confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $20,000.00 secured bond.

On February 17, 2011, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit served arrest warrants on Robert Henry Leder, 56 years of age, of 238 Bay City Road in Aurora and Alicia Sanchez Reed, 25 years of age, of 1051 Peedtown Road in Aurora.

Leder was charged with two counts of Conspiracy to Traffic in Cocaine and Conspiracy to Sell Cocaine.  Reed was charged with two counts of Trafficking in Cocaine and Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Cocaine.  Their arrest stemmed from Investigators making purchases of cocaine from Leder and Reed.

Leder was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $26,000.00 secured bond.  Reed was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $50,000.00 secured bond.

On February 10, 2011, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit executed a Search Warrant at 109 Haven Way in Washington.  Investigators and Canine Elza found marijuana, marijuana smoking pipes and plastic baggies used to package marijuana.

Investigators arrested Kenneth Dellinger, 18 years of age, of 109 Haven Way in Washington, Thomas Capehart, 17 years of age, of 88 Cypress Shores Drive in Washington and Shane Dawkins, 18 years of age, of 509 Charlotte Street in Washington.

Dellinger was charged with two counts of Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Marijuana, two counts of Conspiracy to Sell Marijuana, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Capehart was charged with five counts of Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Marijuana, two counts of Conspiracy to Sell Marijuana, Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Schedule II Controlled Substance, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Dawkins was charged with Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Their arrest stemmed from Investigators making purchases of marijuana and pain prescription pills from Dellinger and Capehart at Dellinger’s residence.

Dellinger was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $16,500.00 secured bond.  Capehart was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $27,500.00 secured bond.  Dawkins was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $400.00 secured bond.

On December 17, 2010, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a larceny of copper wire from PCS Phosphate in Aurora.  The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation and conducted interviews.  After reviewing evidence, Beaufort County Investigators applied for and obtained search warrants for two residences near Vanceboro in Craven County.  Craven County Sheriff’s Office Investigators assisted with the searches of the two properties.

          On February 1, 2011, Investigator Wesley Waters applied for and obtained a warrant charging Brian Lee Broadway, age 38, of Maple Cypress Road in Vanceboro, NC with one count of Felony Larceny.

          On February 10, 2011, Brian Lee Broadway was served with the warrant by the Craven County Sheriff’s Office at the Craven County Detention Center where he was already in custody.  Broadway was held on a $51,000.00 secured bond for this and other unrelated charges.

On January 6, 2011, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of fraud from an assisted living facility in Pinetown.  The administrator reported inconsistent charges on the company’s fuel card.  The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation and conducted interviews.

          On February 2, 2011, Investigator Wesley Waters applied for and obtained a warrant charging Yashekia Spencer, age 31, of Swamp Road in Pantego, NC with one count of Felony Financial Card Fraud, and one count of Obtaining Property by False Pretenses. 

          On February 2, 2011, Spencer turned herself in at the Magistrate’s Office.  Spencer was held on a $1,500.00 secured bond set by Magistrate Donald Sadler.

On January 28, 2011, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a larceny of metal equipment from a property on Tuten Road in Blounts Creek.  Deputies responded to the area and located two suspects in a wooded area off Little Egypt Road.  The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation and conducted interviews.  During the investigation, Investigators learned that a trailer and a Bobcat loader used by the suspects to move the metal were also stolen.  All of the stolen metal was recovered and returned to the owner.

          As a result, Investigator Wesley Waters arrested Shelton Van Lilly, age 34, of Campbell Road in Vanceboro, NC and Gregory Adams, age 44, of River Road in Vanceboro, NC.  Lilly and Adams were each charged with one count of Felony Larceny.  Lilly and Adams were each held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $3,000.00 secured bond set by Magistrate David Curtis.

On February 4, 2011 at approximately 11:00 p.m., Sgt. Jeremy Landeck with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division and Reserve Deputy Elvira Davis were patrolling the Edward area of Beaufort County.  Sgt. Landeck observed a stationary vehicle in the roadway on Main Street in Edward, N.C.  Sgt. Landeck initiated a traffic stop with the vehicle and made contact with the driver.

            Sgt. Landeck detected an odor of alcohol from the vehicle’s interior and ran the driver’s name through DMV files to determine if the driver had a valid driver’s license.  After learning that the driver had a revoked license and an outstanding Order for Arrest for Failure to Appear in Pamlico County, Sgt. Landeck arrested Marcy Lynn Hawkins, age 29, of Highway 55 in Bayboro, N.C.  Sgt. Landeck conducted a search of the truck Hawkins was operating and located a plastic bag under the driver’s seat that contained approximately 23 grams of a white powder- substance believed to be cocaine.

            Hawkins was transported to the Magistrate’s Office and charged with Possession of Cocaine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Driving While License Revoked.  She was also served with the OFA from Pamlico County.  Hawkins was held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $5,500.00 secured bond.

On February 03, 2011, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit arrested Kevin Wayne Bailey aka Pork Chop, 45 years of age, of 2227 Ripp Highway in Plymouth.  Kevin Bailey was charged with two counts of Trafficking in Opium and five counts of Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Schedule II Controlled Substance.

Bailey’s arrest stemmed from Investigators making trafficking amount purchases of prescription pain pills from Bailey.  Investigators served warrants on Bailey for Trafficking in Opium.  Investigators searched Bailey and found five different types of Schedule II prescription pain pills.

Bailey was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $20,000.00 secured bond.

     On February 03, 2011, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit served arrest warrants on Ernest McCullough Jr., 56 years of age, of 136 McCullough Lane in Washington.  McCullough was charged with three counts of Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Cocaine and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

McCullough’s arrest stemmed from Investigators making purchases of crack cocaine from McCullough.  McCullough was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $5,500.00 secured bond.
