On January 25, 2010, Sgt. Ben Correa was serving as the School Resource Officer at Southside High School.  At approximately 10:30, Sgt. Correa observed a metal clip on the outside of a student’s pants pocket as he walked through the hallway.  Sgt. Correa seized the object and discovered it was a folding knife with a metal clip.  The blade was approximately 3.5 inches long.

             Sgt. Correa notified the school administration and later arrested Matthew Windley, age 16, of Taylor Road in Chocowinity NC for Misdemeanor Possession of a Weapon on School Grounds.  Windley was transported to the Magistrate’s Office where he was held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $500.00 secured bond.

On January 23, 2010 at approximately 9:11 p.m., Deputies with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic assault call on Hickory Drive in Washington.  Upon arrival, Sgt. Jeremy Hewitt attempted to make contact with a Hispanic male sitting in the driver’s seat of an SUV parked in front of the victim’s residence.  The driver sped off as Sgt. Hewitt gave commands for the driver to stop.  The driver traveled South on Hickory Drive and turned right on River Road.

            A second Deputy approaching the scene turned around and attempted to stop the vehicle by activating his emergency lights and siren.  The driver continued west on River Road at speeds of 80 mph.  As the driver of the SUV neared Asbury Church Road, he veered to the left then back to his right crossing both west bound lanes.  The SUV then jumped the curb, struck a parked vehicle and crashed into the La Guadelupana Tienda Mexicana located at 3519 River Road.

            Deputies requested rescue services and surveyed the scene for victims.  Two occupants of the parked vehicle were not injured and the store attendant received minor injuries from a door as she exited the building.  The driver of the SUV was extracted from the SUV by Bunyan Fire Fighters.  He was transported to Beaufort County Hospital where he was treated and released on January 24th at 1:30 a.m.  The driver was arrested by Cpl. Kasey Neal upon release from the hospital and transported to the Magistrate’s Office.  Cpl. Neal applied for and obtained warrants charging Carolino Olarte Perez, age 24, of Our Place Drive in Washington with Felony Flee to Elude Arrest, Driving While Impaired, Injury to Real Property and No Operator’s License.  Perez was held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $25,300.00 secured bond

On January 23, 2010 at approximately 1:00 a.m., Cpl. Kasey Neal performed a traffic stop on Swamp Road in Pantego, NC.  Neal stopped the vehicle for exceeding the posted speed limit and crossing the center line.  Cpl. Neal made contact with the driver and detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage and marijuana.  Cpl. Neal instructed the driver to exit the vehicle and performed a roadside alco-sensor test.  While the driver was out of the vehicle, Cpl. Neal observed the driver acting nervously.

            Cpl. Neal arrested James Aundra Whitney, age 31, of Edward Street in Belhaven at the scene for Driving While Impaired.  During a search of Whitney, Neal located a substance believed to be crack cocaine and a baggie containing a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine.  Whitney was taken before a Magistrate and charged with Possession With Intent to Sell and Deliver Cocaine.  He was held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on an $1800.00 secured bond.

On October 5, 2009, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a Breaking and Entering and Larceny that occurred at a residence on Bay City Road in Aurora NC.  The victim reported several items stolen including a safe and firearms.  The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation, collected evidence, and conducted interviews.

            As a result of the investigation, Investigator Ernest Moore applied for and obtained warrants charging Anthony Bragg, age 19, of Bay City Road in Aurora; Markeem Clark, age 21, of Bay City Road in Aurora; and Maurice Jenkins, age 20, of Highway 33 East in Edward with one(1) count each of  Felony Breaking and Entering, one(1) count each of Felony Larceny, one(1) count each of Larceny of a Firearm, and one(1) count each of Safecracking.  Bragg was also charged with Larceny of Chose in Action, Forgery on an Instrument, and Uttering a Forged Instrument. 

            Bragg turned himself in on December 30, 2009 and was held in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $10,000 secured bond set by Magistrate Smith.  Jenkins turned himself in on January 9, 2010 and was held in the Beaufort County Detention center under a $10,000 secured bond set by Magistrate Smith.  Clark turned himself in on January 18, 2010 and was held in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $25,000 secured bond set by Magistrate Curtis.

On September 15, 2009, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an armed robbery and assault at Platinum Motors in Washington.  The victim reported that someone broke into the business on US Highway 264 West; robbed and assaulted the victim at gun point; and left the business with an undisclosed amount of cash, credit cards and company checks.  The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation, collected evidence, and conducted interviews. 

On January 21, 2010, Investigator Jim Martin applied for and obtained warrants charging Robert Dwight Wilson, age 44, of Farless Road in Merry Hill NC with one count each of Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury, First Degree Kidnapping, Felony Breaking and Entering and Felony Larceny.

Wilson was arrested on January 21st in Windsor NC with the assistance of the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office.  He was held on a $500,000.00 secured bond in the Bertie County Jail.  The investigation is on-going and additional arrests are possible.

On October 16, 2009, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of Breaking and Entering and Larceny from a residence on Woodstock Road in Belhaven, NC.  The victim reported that several firearms had been stolen.

The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation, conducted interviews, and collected evidence.  During the investigation, a search warrant was obtained and executed at a residence on North Boyd Road in Pinetown.  During the search, Investigators seized a pill bottle containing thirty-one tablets of Percocet, a Schedule II controlled substance.  On December 31, 2009, Investigator Jim VanLandingham applied for and obtained a warrant charging Justin Thomas Tate, age 21, of Old Pamlico Beach Road in Belhaven with Trafficking Opium by Possession.  Tate was arrested on December 31st and released on a $5000.00 secured bond.

On January 17, 2010, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an attempted armed robbery of a pizza delivery person.  The attempted robbery occurred at an uninhabited residence on Baker Drive in Washington.  Deputies with the Patrol Division responded to the area and began an investigation.

While patrolling the River Road Estates community, Deputy Jeremy Landeck located a person at a residence on Joyner Circle that matched the description of the suspect provided by the victim.  Landeck made contact with the suspect, conducted an interview, and collected evidence.  Deputies traced the phone number used to order the pizzas back to another suspect at the residence.

At the conclusion of the investigation, Cpl. Michael Sheppard applied for and obtained Juvenile Petitions charging three juveniles with Attempted Armed Robbery.  The juveniles were arrested and transported to a juvenile detention facility in Pitt County.

On December 11, 2009, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of Larceny at Webster’s Radiator in Washington.  The victim reported that someone stole assorted aluminum hoses from the rear of the business. The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation, reviewed evidence, and conducted interviews.

Duringthe investigation, Investigators searched a residence on Libbie Lane in Washington.  During the search, stolen property was recovered that belonged to Webster’s Radiator and Century Link of Highway 264 East in Washington.  Investigators also discovered that assorted steel was stolen from a residence on 264 East in Washington.

On January 15, 2010, Investigator Jim Martin applied for and obtained warrants charging Austin Lee Asby, age 18, of Libby Lane in Washington with one count of Felony Larceny, two counts of Misdemeanor Larceny and two counts of First Degree Trespass.  Asby turned himself in on January 15th and was released on a $5,000.00 secured bond by Magistrate David Curtis.

On January 8, 2010, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit executed a Search Warrant on Venice Taylor, 31 years of age, of 445 Sams Road in Chocowinity and Marcia Norfleet, 27 years of age, of 445 Sams Road in Chocowinity.

Taylor was arrested and charged with six counts of Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Cocaine and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  Taylor was wanted by probation from Lenoir County for Probation Violation.  A warrant from Lenoir County was served on Taylor for Probation Violation.

          Norfleet was arrested and charged with Maintaining a Dwelling to Keep a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.   

          Investigators and Canine Elza found two digital scales, razorblades and plastic baggies that contained crack cocaine residue.

Taylor was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $75,000.00 secured bond.

          Norfleet was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $5,000.00.

On January 6, 2010, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit executed a Search Warrant on Michael Crawford, 27 years of age, of 1874 Old Blounts Creek Road in Chocowinity.  Crawford was charged with two counts of Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Cocaine, Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.

 Investigators and Canine Elza found approximately two grams of crack cocaine, twenty five grams of marijuana, and a loaded 12 gauge Mossberg Pump Shot Gun.

  While Investigators were searching Crawford’s residence Tammy Latham, 34 years of age, of 187 Charlie Lane in Chocowinity and Donald Ward Jr., 43 years of age, of 2039 Worthington Road in Greenville called Crawford’s cell phone and arrived at Crawford’s residence for the purpose of purchasing crack cocaine.

Investigators searched Latham when she arrived at Crawford’s residence and found a small quantity of marijuana and 1.5 rolling papers.  Latham was charged with Attempting to Purchase Cocaine and Possession of Marijuana.

Investigators searched Ward when he arrived at Crawford’s residence and found a metal crack smoking pipe in Ward’s pocket.  Ward was charged with Attempting to Purchase Cocaine and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Crawford was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $50,000.00 secured bond.

          Latham and Ward were released under a $5,000.00 unsecured bond.

On August 20, 2009, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a Breaking and Entering and Larceny in progress that was occurring on Chandler Road in Chocowinity, NC.  Corporal Kasey Neal responded and initiated a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle in the area.  Cpl. Neal identified the occupants as suspects in the break-in and recovered stolen items from the vehicle’s interior.  Cpl. Neal arrested two occupants of the vehicle, John Mayo, age 17, and Danielle Baker, age 17, both of Highway 102 West in Chocowinity.  Mayo was charged with Felony Possession of Stolen Property.  Baker was charged with Resist, Delay, or Obstruct a Public Officer for interfering during the initial investigation.  Deputy Clint York also responded to the call.  Deputy York located a third suspect with assistance from homeowners in the area.  York arrested Damien Sutton, age 18, of Summerlin Lane in Vanceboro NC and charged him with Breaking and Entering a Motor Vehicle and Misdemeanor Larceny.  All three were later released on bond.  The Sheriff’s Office continued the investigation and conducted interviews.

            On December 30th, Investigator Ernest Moore applied for and obtained warrants charging John Mayo, Damien Sutton, Danielle Baker, and Amber Harrell, age 18, of Clarks Neck Road in Washington with one(1) count each of Felony Breaking and Entering and one(1) count each of Felony Larceny.  Mayo, Baker, and Harrell were also charged with one(1) count each of Breaking and Entering of a Motor Vehicle.

            Harrell turned herself in on December 30th and was held at the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $5,000 secured bond.  Sutton turned himself in on December 31st and was released on a $3,000 secured bond.  Mayo turned himself in on January 1, 2010 and was released on a $10,000 secured bond.  Baker turned herself in on January 1, 2010 and was released on a $3500 secured bond.

On December 6, 2009, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a Breaking and Entering of a Motor Vehicle and Larceny that occurred at a residence on Highway 264 West in Washington.  The victim reported a rifle stolen.  The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation, collected evidence, and conducted interviews.

            As a result of the investigation, Investigator Ernest Moore applied for and obtained warrants charging Rashad Pridgen, age 20, of Cody Road in Washington, NC with one(1) count of Breaking and Entering of a Motor Vehicle, one(1) count of Larceny of a Firearm, and one(1) count of Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. 

            Pridgen is still at large and is attempting to avoid arrest. If you have any information on the whereabouts of Rashad Pridgen, please call the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office at (252)946-7111 or Beaufort County Crime Stoppers at 252-974-6400.  Crime Stoppers will pay up to a $1,000.00 reward for information leading to his arrest.  Callers do not have to give their name to receive a reward.
